Description

Inverted nipples occur when the tissue from which the nipple is supposed to form does not rise during breast development. This is a inborn (congenital) condition.

An inverted nipple can be corrected spontaneously with growth, so the operation is postponed until adulthood, when breast growth has already been completed.

Correction of inverted nipples

Facts

  • Local anesthesia
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Procedure takes about 30 minutes
  • Recovery in 2 days, stitches are left for 2 weeks

The idea behind the surgery is to cutt-off the ligamentous bands that pull the nipple into the breast.

  • In the case of a more significant nipple invertion, it is necessary to release the nipple by more extensive tissue preparation, which may also disrupt the milk ducts - this brings the risk of an inability to breastfeed.
  • The surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia and the procedure itself takes around 30 minutes.
  • The stitches are left in for 14 days.
