Dental Implants

Description
A missing tooth can be replaced with a dental implant (an artificial tooth, endosseous implant).
Dental implant has 3 parts:
- Implant body (fixture) - a screw like part (serves as the root) made of titanium or zirconium, placed into the jawbone.
- Abutment - a connecting piece to the crown.
- Crown - the visible outer part (resemble a tooth).
A dental implant is placed in patients after tooth loss (missing tooth after tooth extraction, after an accident, loss after chemotherapy, congenitally missing teeth - aplasia).
It is also suitable when a denture (false teeth) needs to be fixed or several missing teeth need to be bridged.
Facts
- Local anesthesia
- Outpatient procedure
- Procedure lasts 60 minutes for 1 implant
- Eat and drink after 2 hours
What are the consequences of a missing tooth?
- After a tooth is lost, the entire bite is at risk because the other teeth begin to shift.
- Even the bone in the place where the tooth is missing is affected by bone atrophy.
- There are problems with speech (lisp/mumble), leakage of food and liquids.
- Problems with biting and chewing food.
- Aesthetic defect.
Dental implants can be used in any patient, regardless of age or other diseases.
However, there are risk patients in whom healing is impaired and the risk of the implant rejection is higher:
- Heavy smokers
- Patients with tuberculosis, sarcoidosis.
Before the actual insertion of the implant, a thorough examination of the patient is necessary, which also includes a special dental X-ray (3D image) or CT scan.
- The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and in the first step, an implant is inserted, which is covered with a temporary cover (temporary tooth).
- After the implant has healed (usually after 2 - 3 months), the temporary tooth is replaced with a permanent ceramic tooth in the second step.
The advantage is that the dental implant is a permanent replacement of the tooth.
After the treatment, you must not eat or drink for 2 hours and wait for the local anesthetic to subside.
- Swelling may occur after the procedure, pain after the anesthetic wears off (analgesics - painkillers are suitable).
- If your dentist prescribes antibiotics, you must take them as recommended.
- It is not advisable to bite the place where the implant was inserted. It is therefore necessary to adjust the meal until complete healing (around 6 weeks). A mushy and liquid diet is more suitable.
- Meticulous dental hygiene is important and should be improved, especially if the dental implant is placed in the area of a tooth damaged by dental caries.
With a dental implant, it is possible to replace not only one missing tooth, but it is also possible to fix the entire artificial dentition with the help of several implants:
- All on 4 implant - the entire dentition (dental bridge or denture) is fixed on 4 implants on one dental arch.
- All on 6 implant - fixation of the dental denture using 6 implants.
A removable dentures can also be attached to the dental implants.
